Another tip from us is to plant species of flowers that have different blooming periods. Ensuring that you have blooming flowers all year round will increase your chance of attracting hummingbirds as your yard will be known as a great food source throughout the year. Encourage your neighbors to plant some native flowers too!

2. Go RED

You will often hear others suggesting to fill your yard with the color red to attract humming bird, but why? Hummingbirds have a dense concentration of cones in their retina. These cones are yellow and red colored pigments that act as a filter. This heightens a hummingbird’s sensitivity for the anything in the red-yellow color range while also dulling colors such as blue.

In addition, hummingbirds will seek the flowers that contain most nectar. They have come to learn that red flowers are most likely to provide them with rich nectar and are therefore attracted to anything red. However, hummingbirds will not only feed on red flowers alone. They have a great sense of which flowers offers good nectar and will feed on other colored flowers if they find that they contain more nectar.

In combination with tip #1 we would recommend that you build your yard around native and red flowering plants.

Using red items and feeders around your yard is also a great way to attract hummingbirds. Have you got any yard items that need a new lick of paint? Try red and increase your chances of enticing these little birds!

3. Perches

Beating your wings at 80 beats per second is tough work and sometimes hummingbirds need a rest. Exposed branches are perfect for a break and a vantage point to spot some potential food. Hummingbird will also perch to ensure that no rivals or danger is around and to possible grab a bite as tasty insects can often fly past their beak!

You can make your own perch by simply sticking a dead branch into the ground vertically. The best place for your perches is in quiet shaded areas about 50-feet away from your feeders. This gives the hummingbirds the privacy they require but also a good sight-line of the feeder which they enjoy.

4. Mist

A water source is a great way of enticing any species of birds to your yard. Humming birds in particular love to bathe. Use the hummingbirds heightened sense of hearing and use a water feature to create the sound of running water in your yard. Hummingbird will often seek out water by the sound of water dripping rather than a looking for it visually.

If you do have a water feature such as a fountain in your yard, or a water hose, then adding a misting device is a great tip. Hummingbird love to swoop through misted water as it both cleans them and keeps them cool.

They will often do this before they settle down to perch. Misting devices can be bought in most garden centers or hardware stores. We heavily recommend that you use one as it truly does make a difference!

A simple solution is to use a solar powered water fountain pump in the middle of your bird bath. This pump will keep water running all day long and will be very attractive prospect for nearby hummingbirds.

5. Shrubbery

Hummingbirds tend to nest in the shrubbery or small deciduous trees. They use spider webs and lichens to build their nests close to a supply of nectar. Having shrubbery around the edge of your yard that will offer cover and privacy will certainly encourage any visitors to consider staying.

6. Insect-rich Yard

In addition to nectar, hummingbird love to feed on insects. They are rich in protein and are key to maintaining body strength and for growing new feathers. Hummingbirds are specialized hunters and will often pluck insects out of the air with their long bill or simply eat insects that are resting on leaves or stuck in spider webs.

There are a few things we recommend that will keep the ecosystem of your yard both diverse and healthy.

Stay away from pesticides – Killing your hummingbirds’ source of protein is not advised. They depend heavily on this source of food to survive, especially the young, who need all the protein they can get to grow into strong adults. In addition, killing spiders will eliminate an important ingredient needed for hummingbirds to build their nests.
